Follow these steps to become a QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor.
If you are going to be a virtual bookkeeper, consider becoming a QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor. It is FREE. The certifications for other QuickBooks products (like Desktop and Enterprise, etc) are NOT free. Don’t be confused. There are vast differences between QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online.
The name “QuickBooks” probably has the widest name recognition in small business accounting software. It is owned by a company called Intuit. They have been a major player for decades. Their original products were all based on software that was installed directly on a computer. You’d buy a little box of their CDs at a store and install them on your business computer and hire someone, often an administrative assistant, to work on the bookkeeping between answering phones.
Intuit has been moving RAPIDLY toward their cloud-based products. So much so, they are even discontinuing offering their ProAdvisor certifications on some of their desktop products.
Side-hustling bookkeepers should start out from the very beginning with a mindset toward being COMPLETELY virtual. If you want to serve local businesses that is fine, but you should be able to do all your tasks from the comfort of your own home (or coffee shop, or vacation rental, or Little League field, etc).

After you set up your account, you’ll need a weekend to go through the videos in their learning portal and then take the exams to earn this well-recognized badge.

I’ll close with this: If you aren’t willing to get certified in a software, go find another side-hustle, people. It doesn’t have to be QuickBooks Online. You could get your Xero Advisor Certification. But get certified in your preferred accounting software or you are not going to get traction.
