Belay is a matchmaker for Bookkeepers, VA, and Website developers. There website copy identifies a Christian mission to this company (pretty awesome, from my perspective!), too, though I am not sure how that factors in to their hiring, culture or client selection. A quick glance through some of their resources shows that they have resources geared toward churches. This might be a great place to apply for people with non-profit experience. But definitely check it out even if you don’t have non-profit experience.
They have an Accounting Clerk position open for entry level jobs. They
You can watch my interview with them to learn more about working as a contractor at Belay.
Please say you head about the positions from Bookkeeping Side Hustle in the dropdown menu when you apply. I’ll get a small referral fee.
You’d have to be living under a rock to be in the accounting world and NOT know that Intuit has developed its own virtual bookkeeping and tax staff.
Many people in the accounting industry are not happy about this. Bookkeepers view it as direct competition with the ProAdvisors program. A lot of Tax Pros are not happy about the TurboTax Live jobs either.
I’m trying to stay out of the fray on this one.
- YES, they are direct competition for me as I build my business.
- YES, they are respectable job opportunities for bookkeeping/accounting/tax professionals who want a part time job with benefits. I would be lying if I tried to act like these jobs were not a good fit for folks.
They do hire beginners, even though much of their landing pages say that you need 3 years of experience.
One way to WAIVE that experience requirement is to get the new Intuit Certified Bookkeeping Professional Certificate. You study on the Coursera Platform and then take a proctored exam. Search the word “Intuit” on Coursera to get to the study materials. First 7 days are free, so if you already know accounting basics, you can brush up and take the exam. Watch the interview with the woman who created the course here.

HireMyMom has been around since 2007.
And, men, be not discouraged! They place DADS in jobs, too. And people who aren’t parents.
Here is what they are about: To help businesses hire talented, affordable, virtual team members and freelancers while at the same time, helping mom professionals find flexible, legitimate, home-based work giving them the freedom and flexibility they desire.
I would say that MOST of the jobs at HireMyMom are not bookkeeping jobs, but there are always at least a few. And they are trying to grow that part of their talent pool.
They have an affiliate program that I joined, so these links are affiliate links.
AccountingFly states as its mission that “Accountingfly connects you with cloud accounting jobs, remote accounting jobs, and hybrid jobs at the best employers in the industry, not to mention traditional jobs at respected public accounting firms.“ You can sort filter jobs by the following categories : Contract, Hybrid, Office-based, Part Time, or Remote. You can also create an account with them to get notices whenever a new remote job is posted.
CloudAccountingJobs.com just recently formed in 2022. I’ve got my eye on this one. Please let me know if you are successful with getting hired here. I really want this initiate by Chad Davis to work!
Upwork is a hub for all sorts of freelancing, including freelance bookkeeping. It will take some time to stand out from the crowd, but some people have successfully used Upwork to find most of their clients. It is free for freelancers to bid on jobs, but Upwork stays in business by taking a cut of the fee you charge. The more business you do via Upwork, the less the fee percentage is.
This is one of the MOST WATCHED videos on my YouTube Channel, all about getting clients on Upwork.
Flexjobs is a membership job site. From its website: “FlexJobs is a job service that curates flexible, professional, and legitimate job opportunities and puts them into one easy place for you to find them (and also allows pre-screened, approved employers to find candidates who fit their hiring needs and then reach out to them directly).” This company has been around since 2007, so it has stood the test of time. You do have to pay to access their jobs. One cool thing is that people can buy you a “gift card” for the site membership. So you can ask a loved one to gift you this instead of getting new dish towels or house shoes or your dog can get you this as his Christmas present.
Note: Prices as of spring 2019
Supporting Strategies is a franchised-based bookkeeping business model. They hire remote bookkeeping talent for part-time work. They have their own proprietary software that helps them manage their remote staff and work-flows, but they use QuickBooks Online to serve their clients.
CPAMoms bills themselves as “the ‘eHarmony’ of the Accounting World”. They go on to say “CPA MOMS® specializes in the careful selection and screening of experienced professional CPAs. We find, screen & test CPAs that are moms and connect them to entrepreneurs looking for affordable bookkeeping, accounting or tax solutions nationwide. What makes us unique is our ability to provide business owners with an affordable solution by working exclusively with CPAs willing to exchange high salaries for flexibility.” Check out this site if you have your CPA and want to freelance and work from home.
So, you are likely on this blog because you want to learn how to get PAID to do bookkeeping. But don’t dismiss this route too quickly. If you have the luxury of time to volunteer, you can use VolunteerMatch.org to get some hands on bookkeeping experience. These non-profits are going to have board members from the local community and business world. Go knock their socks off. Then come back and ask the to pay you.
