John Garrett is the accountant turned comedian and host of the “What’s Your And” podcast. https://thejohngarrett.com/whats-your-and/
He recently took all of his years of experience of thinking about how important it is to always remember that “Who you are is so much more than what you do” and synthesized it into a great book called “What’s Your And”. Your “And” is that part of your life that makes you interesting. The part of your life that you do AFTER work. The things that you are passionate about.
In this interview, I ask John how the message of his book can apply to bookkeeping entrepreneurs that might not have big offices and lots of co-workers. If you need some inspiration on how to put yourself out there, to be more natural at networking, to be YOURSELF because it is good for your business, listen to this interview.
We’ll laughed a whole lot, too.
You know what else I though, this book would be a GREAT gift for your small business clients!
Here are some of the questions we touched on in our interview.
- Tell us about your book What’s Your And. Why did you write it? Who is it for?
- Many (most?) of the folks in the Bookkeeping Side Hustle group are starting out as solo-preneurs, slowly building our business. How do the principles of What’s Your And apply to solo operators? I am not in a public accounting office or tax law firm or whatever? I might be in my bedroom or kitchen table and might have a child sitting next to me crying or doing virtual school (or both).
- What is your best networking advice for people who are brand new at this? Or maybe have been out of the workforce for while (like I was)?
- In your book you cite a Gallup study saying that we need 6 hours of social time per day? What are some of the best ways that we can do this now in a Covid Quarantine world?
- In your book you say there are two ways to stand out. “You can be the best or you can be different”. And you say being different is a better path to take. How can a bookkeeping side hustler be different?
- You mention having our “Ands” on your LinkedIn profile and maybe a website. Any more specific advice on how to do that well? Any names you can give us so we can stalk their LI profiles and see how they did it?
- How can people reach you or stay in touch with you?
