The networking concepts in "The Proximity Principle" by Ken Coleman can be applied to virtual bookkeepers .
Yesterday while I was mowing my yard (and my next door neighbor’s yard for a cool extra $40 bucks/mow. Boom!) I caught this Dave Ramsey Bonus Episode with author Ken Coleman about his new book called “The Proximity Principle”. I recommend that all of y’all take a listen. NOW!
The title of the episode is BONUS EPISODE: The Importance of Finding a Job You Love. If this title speaks to you, LISTEN! (Note, after a while I think this link won’t work, but keep reading, I’m going to tell you the principles).

Bookkeeping Side-Hustlers Can Live Their Dream
I think many of y’all are reading this Bookkeeping Side Hustle Blog and are a part of the Bookkeeping Side Hustle Facebook Group because y’all have dreams of building a life that you love.
This episode says several things that apply to us bookkeeping side-hustlers that have that dream.
- We don’t want to live the life of someone who says “Thank Goodness It’s Friday!” and “Oh No, It’s Monday!” And we don’t have to live that way!
- We need to put ourselves around the right people if we want to make progress on our careers and realize our dreams.
- Sometimes we have to do some not so fun things at first and make some sacrifices to get where we know we want to be.
- Everything you need to get started is already around you.
I really recommend listening to the entire 24 minutes of episode, which includes the author Ken Coleman reading the Intro and 1st Chapter of “The Proximity Principle” at the very end. But if this podcast link goes bad, then you can try to just listen to the book Introduction and 1st Chapter for free if you sign up here on the Dave Ramsey web page.
The 5 People You Need To Be Around
In the conversation (and in the book, I assume) Ken Coleman outlines the 5 people that you need to be in proximity to to find success.
- Professor – someone who can teach you. Not a college professor, necessarily. For me, it was Ben Robinson and his course Bookkeeper Business Launch.
- Professional – Be around people at the top of their game.
- Producer – someone who is providing jobs in the industry you want to be in.
- Peers – You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Be around people who are pushing you toward your goals.
- Mentor – The sage in your life. Who in your life is speaking wisdom? Who is telling you when you are doing something dumb?
You can get the book on Amazon for less than on the Dave Ramsey website.
What dreams do you have for your career? Can you see how “The Proximity Principle” will help you reach your dreams?
Are your career goals not even related to virtual bookkeeping? Then move on from investigating or dabbling in this field and do what you really want to do!
